Most lubricant problems in a plant are not caused by a bad oil. They are caused by the right oil being used in the wrong place, or the wrong grade being used because that is what was on the shelf.

The families, and what actually separates them

Industrial oils are not interchangeable. What distinguishes them is the additive package and the viscosity behaviour, both tuned for a specific duty.

  • Hydraulic oil — built for fluid power. Good anti-wear performance for pumps and valves, resistance to foaming, and the ability to shed water and air quickly.
  • Gear oil — carries extreme-pressure additives so the film survives the sliding, high-load contact inside a gearbox. Generally much heavier than hydraulic oil.
  • Turbine oil — prized for oxidation stability and long life in service, plus good water separation. Designed to stay clean over very long drain intervals.
  • Compressor oil — formulated to resist oxidation and deposit formation at sustained high temperature.
  • Cutting oil and metalworking fluids — a different job entirely: cooling, lubricating and flushing swarf at the tool tip.
  • Engine oil — carries detergents and dispersants to handle combustion by-products, which industrial oils do not need.

Viscosity is the decision, not the brand

Viscosity grade matters more than most purchase decisions allow for. Too thin and the film breaks down under load, letting surfaces touch. Too thick and you get drag, heat and poor flow at start-up — a real issue on cold mornings, and in coastal plants during winter.

The equipment manual specifies a grade for a reason. Where the manual is long gone, the machine nameplate, the gearbox type and the operating temperature will get you most of the way there.

Greases are chosen the same way

With grease, the thickener and the base oil viscosity matter as much as the NLGI consistency number. A multi-purpose grease covers a lot of general plant duty. Bearings running hot, very heavily loaded, or exposed to water washing usually need something more specific.

Habits that shorten oil life

  • Topping up with whatever is open. Mixing oils can knock out the additive package of both.
  • Dirty transfer equipment. A contaminated funnel or jug undoes the value of clean new oil.
  • Storing drums outside. Temperature cycling draws moisture past the bung. If drums must sit outdoors, lay them on their side.
  • Draining on a calendar instead of on condition. Oil analysis very often shows that oil is being thrown away early — or left in far too long.
  • Ignoring water. Water is one of the most damaging contaminants in a hydraulic or gear system, and it is frequently the cheapest thing to fix.

What we supply

We are an authorised dealer for Gulf Oil Lubricants India, covering gear oil, hydraulic oil, cutting oil, bearing oil, diesel engine oil, engine oil CI4 Plus, turbine oil, industrial greases and multi-purpose grease. Fast-moving grades are held at our Adipur premises, so an urgent requirement does not have to wait on a warehouse in another state.

If you are unsure of the grade, tell us the machine rather than guessing at the oil. We would far rather confirm the specification than supply the wrong drum quickly.
